Giggs: Experience will help United in title push

By STEVE DOUGLAS

updated 11:42 a.m. ET Dec. 29, 2011

LONDON (AP) -With most of its title rivals toiling over the Premier League's traditionally busy holiday period, Manchester United has found an extra gear that seems likely to take the team to the top of the standings heading into 2012.

United has wiped out the five-point lead held by Manchester City at the start of December and is seeking a sixth straight win when it hosts bottom side Blackburn on Saturday - the day manager Alex Ferguson celebrates his 70th birthday.

That would leave City in the unusual position of being behind in this season's title race when Roberto Mancini's team visits Sunderland on New Year's Day.

Even a mountainous injury list - currently featuring 11 players - hasn't yet upset United, the reigning champions seeking a 20th English championship success.

"The experience that the manager, the players and the coaching staff have of what's required in the second half of the season, as well as the overall hunger and desire to win competitions, will help us," said veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs, who recently scored for the 20th straight season in the Premier League.

"Big players can't wait for big games. Toward the end of the season the games just get bigger and bigger. For me personally, you want that in the run-in - you want to be involved in big games and going for the title. That's why you become a footballer."

City goes into the latest round of fixtures over the festive period ahead of its fierce rival on goal difference but, without an English title since 1968, it doesn't have United's experience heading into the run-in.

The leaders have dropped five points in its last four matches.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool seem to be out of the title picture, leaving Tottenham, which has won eight of its last 10 matches, looking like the only side capable of breaking the Manchester duopoly at the top of the table.

Seven points behind the pair with a game in hand, Spurs visit Swansea on Saturday where in-form Wales winger Gareth Bale will return to his native country.

"It's great to be up there but we know ultimately that we have to keep concentrating," said Bale, who scored both of Tottenham's goals in the 2-0 win over Norwich on Tuesday.

"It's not even halfway through the season, there's still a lot of games to go and nothing's achieved at this stage of the season. Hopefully we can keep the form that we're in and keep pushing ourselves up the table."

Chelsea - four points adrift in fourth after a run of three straight draws - hosts Aston Villa and fifth-place Arsenal is at home to Queens Park Rangers.

The stand-out match sees Liverpool host Newcastle on Friday, when home striker Andy Carroll looks to start repaying the faith shown in him by manager Kenny Dalglish.

Luis Suarez's one-match suspension for sticking his middle finger up at Fulham fans in a recent league match should ensure Carroll starts at Anfield against the team that sold him for 35 million pounds ($56 million) in a stunning last-minute deal in January's transfer window.

The mighty price tag - which made him one of the world's costliest ever players - appears to be weighing heavily on the England international, who has only scored twice in the league this season and has often started on the bench behind Suarez.

Brushing aside regular stories in the British press about Carroll's off-field habits - he was urged by England manager Fabio Capello in September to drink less if he is to become a regular in the national squad - Dalglish insists the player can still thrive at Liverpool.

"He is adapting well to the change and we will keep working with him and, fortunately for Andy, we have much greater belief in him than a lot of people have who write about him," Dalglish said.

"He is not struggling to deal with anything - I don't think self-belief is a problem for Andy Carroll, I don't see why it should be."

Carroll - a boyhood Newcastle fan - could be set for an extended run in Liverpool's starting lineup after Suarez was handed an eight-match ban from the Football Association last week for racially insulting Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match in October.

The Uruguay international is likely to appeal against the suspension but could face a lengthy spell out, giving regular opportunities to Carroll.

With Liverpool having drawn its last two games, against lowly sides Wigan and Blackburn, it needs to get back to winning ways to keep pace with its rivals for the Champions League places.

Liverpool is currently in sixth place, a point and a place above Newcastle but three off Chelsea.

"I think we deserve to be higher up the table than we are but you've got to earn that right and not talk about it," Dalglish said. "To be fair, they (the players) have done a lot of talking on the pitch for us.

"As long as we are in there somewhere, continue to do the right things and give ourselves a chance (come the end of the season) then we'll be happy with that."

Why Google Just Can't Quit the Muppets

It?s no longer news when the company that once famously refused to run commercials does so ? another sign of conventionality in the company that?promised not to be conventional?? but it is still rare enough to be worthy of analysis.

Above is the Google holiday commercial, where the Muppets do a Google+ Hangout.

You get a sense of Google?s strategic priorities by seeing that it?s spending millions to promote Google+. The war for personal information is crucial to Google, and it?s the impetus behind Google+, as I?ve written?here. Further information comes in a follow-up interview with?Bradley Horowitz,?a co-leader of the project.

You get a sense of what works well in Google+ by noting that the focus of the ad is?Hangouts, a relatively late addition to Google+ that has helped hone its purpose. It?s a cool feature, but also makes a statement: This product is about what?s happening now. Google is well-placed to be a leader in real-time presence, and merging group chat into a social experience has been a win.

But there?s another message, too. You get a sense of Google?s culture ? and who the people of Google are ? by the choice of the?Muppets?as the stars of the commercial. Muppets are central to the lives of Googlers. The vast majority of Googlers are people in their twenties and thirties who have completed the perilous obstacle course of the meritocracy, probably starting when their ambitious parents plucked them in front of the telly to absorb the lessons of Big Bird and Count Von Count. (My bet is that many of those parents were otherwise parsimonious with tube time.) Along with the lessons, they bonded with the puppets, much as toddlers get fixated on blankies and stuffed animals.

As a result, even the most math-geeky Googlers kind of melt at the sight of Miss Piggy. It?s not even too much of a stretch to claim that the do-goody ethic of Sesame Street was the forerunner of Don?t Be Evil.

The Muppets keep popping up at the Googleplex. Google?s very first paid employee, Craig Silverstein, was the founder of the internet group??rec.arts.henson+muppets

One of the languages included in?Google?s translation program?is the weird (?bork, bork, pork!?) pidgin of the Swedish Chef from the Muppets Show.

According to Doug Edwards (in his memoir?I?m Feeling Lucky)?in Google?s early days, the most important chart on the internal web site was the measure of search quality of various engines. Each line on the chart (representing the effectiveness of a given company in delivering results) was labeled by a Muppet character. Google?s label for itself was ?The Great Gonzo.?

Yemen's leader causes headaches in Washington

(AP) ? The Obama administration is weighing an unprecedented diplomatic act ? whether to bar a friendly president from U.S. soil.

American officials were evaluating on Tuesday an awkward request from Yemeni strongman and longtime U.S. counterterrorism partner Ali Abdullah Saleh. Saleh has said he plans to come to the United States for medical treatment for injuries suffered in a June assassination attempt, and he has asked for a U.S. visa for entry to the country. Fearful of appearing to harbor an autocrat with blood on his hands, the Obama administration was trying to ensure that Saleh visits only for medical care and doesn't plan to stay, U.S. officials said.

Washington's hesitation reflects the shifting alliances and foreign policy strategy prompted by a year of upheaval in the Arab world. Saleh has served as an American ally against al-Qaida and will soon transfer power under a U.S.-backed deal with Yemen's opposition aimed at ending months of instability. He isn't subject to any U.S. or international sanctions.

But he also is accused of committing gross human rights violations during a year of internal conflict, and the U.S. is trying not to burn any bridges with Yemeni political groups likely to take part in future governments. Political asylum for Saleh in the United States, or the appearance of preferential treatment from an administration that has championed peaceful and democratic change, would be highly unpopular with Yemenis who've fought to depose their dictator of 33 years.

Officials close to the Saleh said Washington's suspicion that he may seek political asylum was delaying approval of his trip. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. But American officials appeared to substantiate those concerns and said they were troubled by Saleh's recent comments portraying his trip as a move designed to ease the political transition.

"What we're looking at now is a request to come to the United States for the sole purpose of medical treatment," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said, refusing to go into the specific of the evaluation. "That permission has not been granted yet."

Toner declined to elaborate on the assurances the United States wanted from Saleh or offer a timetable for a decision. He also couldn't say whether any provisions existed under U.S. law to prevent the Yemeni leader from visiting the country ? provided he assures officials he demonstrates he'll only stay temporarily.

In that case, Saleh almost surely will be granted entry, U.S. officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because visa evaluations are supposed to be confidential. It's unclear when, if ever, the last time the head of state of a friendly government was blocked from visiting the United States.

One official went so far as to say Saleh's exit from Yemen might be beneficial by lowering the risk of disruptions in the lead-up to planned February elections. The U.S. is committed to doing everything it can to ensure those elections take place, the official said, but President Barack Obama's national security team was expected to make the final decision on Saleh's request. Obama was being briefed on developments while on vacation in Hawaii.

Demonstrators began protesting against Saleh and calling for his ouster in February. The Yemeni government responded with a bloody crackdown, leaving hundreds of protesters dead, and stoking fears of instability in a nation grappling with burgeoning extremism. Yemen's dangerous al-Qaida branch, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, has taken advantage of the vacuum to expend its presence in the south of the country.

International pressure has mounted for months for Saleh to step aside. A June rocket attack on his compound left him badly burned and wounded, and led Saleh to seek medical treatment in neighboring Saudi Arabia for three months. American officials had hoped he would remain there, but the Yemeni leader returned and violence worsened anew.

Last month, Saleh agreed to a Saudi-backed deal to hand power to his vice president and commit to stepping down completely in exchange for immunity. The deal further angered Saleh's opponents, who demanded he be tried for his attacks on protesters. Opponents also lament that he has continued to wield influence through loyalists and relatives remaining in positions of power, and many fear he may find a way to continue his rule.

Protests have expanded recently to include labor strikes, calls for Saleh to be put on trial and demands that his loyalists to be removed from office. Activists said troops commanded by Saleh's relatives attacked protesters in the capital of Sanaa over the weekend, killing at least nine people. Tens of thousands demonstrated the following day.

Saleh's immediate plans are unclear. The wily leader of three decades has maintained his rule over a country divided by tribal and regional loyalties by consistently outsmarting his opponents, but Toner said the U.S. is trying to remind everyone of the "importance of continuing along this agreed-upon path of political transition that will lead to the next election."

"We need to see that process continue regardless of where President Saleh is," Toner said.

An American official said Saleh's office informed the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa that the outgoing leader would leave Yemen soon and travel elsewhere abroad first, before possibly coming to the U.S.

The situation offers an eerie parallel to three decades ago, when President Jimmy Carter allowed the exiled shah of Iran into the U.S. for medical treatment. The decision contributed to rapidly worsening relations between Washington and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's revolution in Tehran, with Iranian students occupying the U.S. Embassy in Iran a month later.

Fifty-two American hostages were held for 444 days in response to Carter's refusal to send the shah back to Iran for trial.

Mexico Arrests Key Cartel Member

The Mexican army announced Sunday that it had captured the head of security for Sinaloa drug cartel head Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the world's most wanted men.

The suspect, who was not identified by name, was captured in the Sinaloa state capital of Culiacan and will be presented to the media Monday morning, the army said.

Guzman, Mexico's top drug lord, is one of the world's richest men, and has eluded authorities by moving around and hiding since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck.

The army said the man they had arrested also ran cartel activities in Durango and southern Chihuahua state, and was responsible for carrying out secret burials of cartel victims, kidnapping, extortion and arson. They did not say if the arrest moved the military closer to capturing Guzman, an arrest that would be seen as a major victory for the government of President Felipe Calderon.

Guzman is worth more than $1 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which has listed him among the "World's Most Powerful People." He has a $7 million bounty on his head, and thousands of law enforcement agents from the U.S. and other countries working on capturing him.

His cartel controls cocaine trafficking on the Mexican border with California and has moved eastward to the corridor between the Mexican state of Sonora, which borders Arizona.

Separately, Mexican soldiers discovered 13 bodies in an abandoned truck Sunday along with a message that they were killed in a war between rival drug cartels in the eastern state of Veracruz, officials said.

The bodies were found in Tamaulipas state, a few hundred yards (meters) from its border with Veracruz, according to the Tamaulipas attorney general's office.

The area has been the scene of bloody battles between the Gulf and Zetas cartels, and a pair of banners alluding to a rivalry were found in the truck, the statement from the attorney-general's office said.

On Friday, the attorney general's office in Veracruz said it had found 10 bodies in a different area along the border with Tamaulipas after receiving a tip.

On Thursday, three U.S. citizens traveling to spend the holidays with their relatives in Mexico were among those killed in a spree of shooting attacks on buses. In the spree, a group of gunmen attacked three buses in Veracruz, killing a total of seven passengers.

The Americans killed were a mother and her two daughters who were returning to visit relatives in the region.

The five gunmen who allegedly carried out the attacks were later shot to death by soldiers.

Earlier, the gunmen also killed four people in the nearby town of El Higo, Veracruz.

Local police in Veracruz have become so corrupt that on Wednesday the government decided to dissolve the entire force in the state's largest city, also known as Veracruz, and sent the Navy in to patrol. Some 800 police officers and 300 administrative employees were laid off.

Commentary: NCAA, Ohio St., both to blame

By Brian Kollars, Staff Writer Updated 1:15 PM Sunday, December 25, 2011

The in-laws came up huge with an amazing gift. If you drive past our house, you?ll see a small leg lamp in the window, a replica of the cussing dad?s big prize in ?A Christmas Story.? Our teenager is appalled that I would display this fine piece of craftsmanship in such a prominent space but, hey, she doesn?t pay the mortgage.

Ohio State football fans got a big lump of coal last week when the NCAA surprised everyone by banning the Buckeyes from a bowl game ... next season. There?s no way the fallout from Jim Tressel?s dirty little secret should stretch into 2012. But it will.

The NCAA allegedly employs bright people who could consult a calendar and figure out that Ohio State was in line for a bowl game this year. Why not step up the pace and drop this bombshell a month earlier? That way, OSU doesn?t go to a meaningless bowl game this season.

On the other hand, the arrogant OSU administration has fumbled at every turn, from the ridiculous news conference during which Tressel was given a big smooch to the weak self-imposed sanctions. If there was any hint of this coming down, OSU should have said no to the Gator Bowl.

I?m sure the attorneys are drawing up Gene Smith?s golden parachute right now.

The NBA tips off today after what seemed like a three-day exhibition season. The most intriguing story line is not the status of Kobe Bryant?s wrist or why Mariah Carey is not part of the league?s marketing plan.

The big question: How long will it take Jack Nicholson to snub the Lakers for the Clippers?

Jill sent me to that fancy new Kroger store in Kettering two days before Christmas. I?m sure she was laughing, but I survived my first trip to the store despite the hand-to-hand combat in the baking goods aisle.

A big thanks to Mary, who checked me out. She asked if I had a Kroger card and my reply was a blank stare. She told me to punch in my phone number, which led to 22 bucks of savings!

Merry Christmas to all of you vociferous readers. We?ll return next week with some New Year?s resolutions for athletes, etc. If you have any suggestions, send them my way and I?ll give you credit for your clever ideas.

Suspect arrested in California soldier shooting - Tue, 27 Dec 2011 PST

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. ? Police on Monday arrested a suspect in a shooting that critically wounded a soldier at his Southern California homecoming party after he survived a suicide bombing attack in?Afghanistan.

Police said Ruben Ray Jurado turned himself in to authorities in Chino Hills, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. The 19-year-old had been sought in the attempted murder of 22-year-old Christopher?Sullivan.

Authorities allege Jurado shot Sullivan at the party Friday night after getting into an argument with the soldier?s brother over football?teams.

Jurado, who had played football with Sullivan in high school, punched Sullivan?s brother and Sullivan intervened. Jurado then pulled a gun and fired multiple shots, hitting Sullivan in the neck, San Bernardino police Sgt. Gary Robertson?said.

Sullivan?s relatives said the Purple Heart recipient was hit twice by gunfire, which shattered his spine and left him?paralyzed.

His mother, Suzanne Sullivan, told the Los Angeles Times that doctors believe her son will be paralyzed from the neck?down.

?I don?t have any emotions. My emotions are none,? she said. ?He didn?t deserve it. He?s an excellent son and an excellent?man.?

Jurado has been transferred to the custody of the San Bernardino Police Department where he will be booked, officials said?Monday.

Sullivan was wounded in a suicide bombing attack last year in Kandahar province while serving with the 101st Infantry Division. He suffered a cracked collarbone and brain damage in the attack and had been recovering in Kentucky, where he is?stationed.

He was home on leave when the shooting?occurred.

Lakewood Police Chief Robert Lawson tells the Asbury Park Press that the two teens ? ages 15 and 17 ? were walking in the Ocean County community early Thursday when a Jeep approached them. Five people inside the vehicle ? three male adults and two juvenile boys ? then allegedly threw several eggs at the teens.

The occupants of the vehicle told the Orthodox teens, ?You better move on you Jew boys,? the Asbury Park Press reported.

A borough police officer spotted and stopped the vehicle a few blocks away. Lawson says the driver admitted they were responsible for throwing the eggs.

The five were charged with bias intimidation and harassment, Lawson said. They were issued summonses and released.

A Calhoun, Ga Family Loses Everything In An F-3 Tornado

Three stitches and five staples,?it is?not exactly what you would?call a Christmas miracle.

Well, that is until you hear Davison Sheriff's story, and see what is?left of his home.

Sheriff adds, "The pressure in the house changed.? My ears started popping."

When Sheriff heard those warning signs, he took his family to what used to be the bathroom closet.

Sheriff says, "From there we started hearing the tin rip of the top of the house."

Sheriff, his wife, and another family member put Owen, 1,?in the middle of the closet, and clung to him tighter than they ever thought possible.

Sheriff adds, "I was thinking, is there really going to be a tornado in December?"

And as soon as he could get that thought out, winds lifted up the frame of his house and cast it aside, and as a group, hurled them over carpet tacks and onto their lawn.

Sheriff adds, "I was thinking, is this the way we're going to die?"

But, miraculously, not one piece of debris going 150 miles per hour hit them.

Sheriff adds, "I'd glance and see a washing machine fly by or hot water heater."

Now, the baby is bruised, and the vehicles are crushed, but that is ok Sheriff, says, because if that is?the worst that comes out of an F-3 Tornado, then?we are?pretty lucky.

Sheriff adds, "Very lucky that we all survived, very lucky."

And the rest of Gordon County was just as lucky.

Nearly 100 homes were affected, two completely destroyed, but no fatalities.

Richard Cooper, EMA Director with Gordon County, says, "It's possible that it actually touched down, lifted back up, and maybe touched down again, and done the same thing in the Northwest corner."

After the National Weather Service took to the skies Friday, Cooper says the tornado moved across the county in a diagonal, from the Southwest corner to the Northeast corner.

It took Christmas presents and left?the wrapping paper behind.

Sony Details U.S. PlayStation Vita Launch Titles

Uncharted: Golden Abyss

The PlayStation Vita won't hit American stores until Feb. 22 (Feb. 15 should you purchase the pre-order bundle), but Sony has already revealed the list of launch titles that will be available for purchase on day one.

The first round of Sony-published titles include Army Corps of Hell, Escape Plan, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, Little Deviants, ModNation Racers: Road Trip, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and wipEout 2048. Launch titles from Sony's third-party partners will include FIFA Soccer, Lumines Electronic Symphony, Touch My Katamari, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Michael Jackson: The Experience, Plants vs. Zombies, and Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour Edition.

Pricing for all PS Vita software will range between $9.99-$49.99. The titles will be available via PS Vita game cards at retail stores or digitally via the PlayStation Network. A select number of PS Vita games, however, will be available exclusively on the PlayStation Network.

The Wi-Fi-powered PS Vita model will be available for $249.99 and the 3G/Wi-Fi PS Vita model will be available for $299.99. The pre-order bundle (which includes a 3G/Wi-Fi PS Vita,?limited edition case, 4GB PS Vita memory card, and the Little Deviants game) will cost $349.

We recently had the opportunity to get hands-on with a not-quite-final version of the PS Vita (see the slideshow below). It's a sleek device that resembles a streamlined, upgraded version of the PlayStation Portable. What's new in terms of physical design is the analog thumbstick (which replaces the analog pad) and a second stick, which brings it closer in design to the PS3 controller.

Ethiopian court finds Swedes guilty of aiding rebels (Reuters)

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) ? An Ethiopian court found two Swedish journalists guilty on Wednesday of helping and promoting the outlawed Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) rebel group, and entering the Horn of Africa nation illegally.

Reporter Martin Schibbye and photographer Johan Persson were arrested in July after they entered Ethiopia's Ogaden province from Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region with a team of ONLF fighters.

Sentencing is due next week and the prosecution asked for a combined sentence of 18 years 6 months for both charges. Sileshi Ketsela, one of the defense lawyers, said they would now discuss with their clients about whether to appeal.

Sweden said it was very concerned about the verdict and was making contact with the Ethiopian government at a high level.

"The government takes a very serious view of the verdict today," Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said in statement.

"Our starting point is and remains that they have been in the country on a journalistic assignment. They should, as soon as possible, be released so that they can be reunited with their families in Sweden," he said.

Addis Ababa has blacklisted the ONLF as a terrorist group, and its recently-adopted anti-terrorism legislation outlaws promotion of the insurgents' activities.

The two Swedes had also been charged with terrorism but were acquitted in November on that count as the court did not believe they were involved in carrying out any attacks. They did admit to crossing the border without a permit.

Judge Shemsu Sirgaga told the court the two journalists had entered Ethiopia illegally under the pretext of investigating the impact of potential oil discoveries and production in the region on the local population.

"Instead they accompanied the ONLF into the country and were caught alongside the rebels. This contradicts their claims," he said in handing down the guilty verdict.

The freelance journalists say they were covering the ONLF as a news story and deny assisting their cause.

During the November trial, prosecutors screened a three-hour video they said was obtained from one of the Swedes' laptops, showing footage of them hoisting rifles alongside armed men and being briefed over a map on how to infiltrate the region.

The editor in chief of Filter, the magazine where they worked, called the journalists "political prisoners."

"I have both a pessimist and an optimist within. For the pessimist, it was really expected, but for optimist it was a shock," Mattias Gransson told Reuters in Sweden.

"When the judge read out the grounds it sounded positive, he had virtually nothing against them. Everything he said was speaking for an acquittal, and then he found them guilty anyway. This indicates they are political prisoners and nothing else."

The Grinchiest MMA Christmas wish list ever

The Grinchiest MMA Christmas wish list ever

This is the time of year we think about gifting and re-gifting for those closest to us. That includes our favorites characters in the world of mixed martial arts.

We choose to re-gift. Bleacher Report's Brian Hiergesell did a dynamite job of coming up with great gift ideas, but with an absolutely snarky tone.

Our favorites were:

12. Michael McDonald - A Time Machine
At this point in his career, Michael McDonald has enough talent and an awesome gift of raw power to win the UFC bantamweight title. The only problem?? He's 20 years old.

Unbelievable, right?

McDonald is one of the only guys at 135 lbs. that can knock out his opponents at such a small weight.? If he had his chance at using a time machine, he'd be able to bypass the useless fights over the next year and wormhole his way to a title shot against Dominick Cruz.

11. Roy Nelson - A KFC Bucket

Roy Nelson probably eats so much food on Christmas Day, it's ridiculous.

I'm talking roast beef, steak, potatoes, yams, corn, the whole nine.? But can you blame him?

It clearly doesn't affect his Octagon skills.? Nelson would be just as good, and he is, if he weighed 180 lbs. compared to his usual 265. No matter what the critics say, the belly is here to stay.

The Grinchiest MMA Christmas wish list ever

5. Jon Jones - A Weakness

I don't think so.? A victory over Overeem would launch Lesnar back into title contention in the heavyweight division and dispel any concerns people have about his recovery from diverticulitis. I realize their fight comes on the eve of New Year's Eve, but how great would it be to see Lesnar step into the Octagon, land a couple of rights, and put Overeem to sleep?

I'm thinking somebody needs to get Jon Jones a weakness for Christmas.? The guy is too good.

3. Brock Lesnar - An Alistair Overeem nap

Is there a more perfect gift for Brock Lesnar this Christmas than an Alistair Overeem snooze?

Apparently Brian isn't a big fan of Overeem, but that's the joy of prepping for UFC 141. Lesnar is the most polarizing guy in the sport and there are plenty of Overeem critics. So pick your poison. It's a win-win for the fans and a helluva late Christmas gift from the UFC.

Gary Oldman Calls 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' Role 'Colossal'

Taking on the role of John le Carré's master spy, George Smiley, involves navigating two enormous obstacles. First, the legendary Alec Guinness claimed the character for himself in the beloved BBC miniseries of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" from 1979. Second, outside the more descriptive world of the novels, Smiley is a mystery, a silent, poker-faced [...]

Iraq oil security tested as U.S. forces withdraw (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? A bombing of southern Iraqi crude pipelines despite a nationwide alert against a possible surge in insurgent attacks has heightened fears for the future security of Iraq's vital oil sector as American troops withdraw.

The oil hub city of Basra, which handles the bulk of the OPEC member's oil exports, has generally seen fewer attacks this year than other cities in the country.

But militants have stepped up assaults over the past months and bombed oil installations despite tight security, testing the ability of Iraqi security forces to halt attacks nearly nine years after the U.S. invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

On Tuesday, three bombs hit a pipeline network that transports crude from Iraq's southern oilfields to storage tanks around Basra, igniting a fire and disrupting output at the Rumaila field, the workhorse of Iraq's oil industry.

"Increased violence directly or indirectly affecting the oil industry is the main risk and unknown in all assumptions, as the impact on projects from a strong deterioration naturally could be massive," said Samuel Ciszuk, a consultant at KBC.

Protecting Iraqi oil reserves, the world's fourth largest, is crucial to Baghdad's plans to rebuild a shattered economy after years of war and economic sanctions, and its desire to become a top producer once again to rival Saudi Arabia.

Oil firms are awarding tenders for work in their fields to reach the production targets they have set after signing a dozen deals in Iraq that could quadruple output capacity to Saudi levels of 12 million barrels per day.

As Washington prepares to end its military presence by December 31, Iraqi officials say the American pullout will not affect oil security because U.S. troops have not been involved in protecting oilfields since 2005.

But Tuesday's attack occurred despite an increase in oil police patrols to protect installations against a possible surge in al Qaeda violence before the U.S. withdrawal.

"There is direct targeting of the oil sector ... By the start of the withdrawal there will be attacks not just on oil, but they (insurgents) will try to unsettle the situation in the country," Major General Hamid Ibrahim, head of Iraq's energy protection told Reuters.

VIOLENCE EASES BUT OIL SITES STILL TARGETED

Overall violence in Iraq has dropped since the peak of sectarian killings in 2006-07, and the Shi'ite Muslim south, where most oil output occurs, is relatively calm. But attacks remain common and militants still target oil infrastructure.

The Iraq-Turkey pipeline in the north, which carries around a quarter of Iraq's oil exports, is regularly hit by sabotage, usually blamed on al Qaeda and former members of Saddam Hussein's banned Baath party.

In early June, bombs were planted atop four crude depots of the Zubair 1 storage facility in Basra, setting ablaze one tank.

Zubair is surrounded by tight security and visitors pass three checkpoints to reach the site. Yet the bombers managed to plant four bombs without being seen by guards.

Tuesday's attack on the oil pipelines was in the same area of Zubair, according to security officials in Basra who said the bombers could have been had inside help.

Diplomatic sources said they believed disputes between the oil workers union and the state-run South Oil Co were behind June's attack, but did not dispel fears insurgents could turn their sights on foreign oil firms after the U.S. withdrawal.

Iraqi officials, however, say there have been no indications that oil firms could come into the crosshairs of insurgents.

"Foreign companies were and are still working in Iraq... There have been some incidents in Basra but they did not target the oil companies specifically," the deputy prime minister for energy affairs, Hussain al-Shahristani, told Reuters.

But Shahristani said Iraq still needed the Americans' help to protect its offshore oil platforms and export pipelines.

The Iraqi navy took over responsibility this year for guarding Iraq's 35 square-nautical-mile-slice of the Gulf and offshore oil export terminals -- the nation's economic lifeline.

More than once this past summer, neighboring Iran sent a fast boat into Iraqi Gulf waters, testing its defenses. Iraqi forces chased the intruders away without escalating tensions.

Competitive oil development in Iraq, however, could increase friction with Iran, OPEC's No. 2 producer, and lure potential foreign investment away from Iraq's neighbors.

The Iraqis can get by for basic security with the training and equipment they have now, said a U.S. military official involved in trained the Iraqi navy since 2004.

"They can do the basics with what they have," the official said. "But if the Iranians came with their ships and missiles, they can't match up."

JITTERS

Foreign investors who ventured into the country's promising energy sector were already on edge before the latest attacks.

On November 24, three bombs tore through a busy market in Basra, a day before a major energy conference, killing 19 people.

After the bombing, local officials said they believed the attack had targeted the country's oil sector ahead of the U.S. withdrawal to undermine Iraq's potential economic power.

Oil majors ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell and ENI, who already work in Iraq, steered clear, leaving their booths empty during the three-day conference.

A day later, a bomb threat at the conference sent foreign executives fleeing. A suspected bomb was found in a car parked outside the venue and police said it was a false alarm.

But an Iraqi security source said an alert had been sent by Iraqi intelligence and security services to security contractors to get executives out of the meeting as it might get targeted.

Local Iraqi officials blamed the incident on neighboring countries with a competitive interest in limiting Iraq's oil growth. Basra, Iraq's major port, sits near Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait - all major oil exporters.

"Every time Basra moves a step ahead they want to push it back a mile," a senior Basra police officer said.

"This oil and gas conference was like a sword on the Gulf's neck, because major companies are coming here to invest instead of going to their countries."

Jermaine Hopkins, Lean on Me Star, Arrested in Major Marijuana Sting

Jermaine "Huggy" Hopkins and Sam Hurd should get together.

Hopkins, the teenage star who went toe-to-toe with Morgan Freeman in the inspirational 1989 movie Lean on Me, has been busted for selling pot in Phoenix.

We're not talking personal-use quantities of the herb, either.

Jermaine Hopkins Mug Shot

According to local Fox affiliate KSAZ, Hopkins was swept up in a drug sting conducted by undercover detectives from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

The actor engaged them in a drug deal involving 200 pounds of marijuana he had in his SUV, along with $100,000 cash. Cops then took him into custody.

Officer Christopher Hegstrom says Jermaine Hopkins was booked into jail on two felony counts of possessing, transporting and trying to sell marijuana.

A subsequent search of his apartment in nearby Avondale, Ariz., also turned up another 100 pounds, its value was estimated at approximately $50,000.

Hopkins actually lives in North Carolina but for whatever reason, made Arizona his place of "business." Now it looks he may be a resident for a long time.

Hey, at least the weather's nice this time of year.

6 ways Mitt Romney is trying to prove he's 'human' (The Week)

New York ? Goodbye, Rombot. Hello, sensitive human? Here's how Team Romney is trying to make the super-rich, often-wooden candidate seem like the rest of us

"Meet Mitt Romney, human," says Reid J. Epstein in Politico. With the GOP nomination seemingly fading from sight, Team Romney has been working overtime to soften the so-called "Rombot" candidate who's been on display all year. The push to "humanize" Romney ? a strategy his campaign team disavows ? has its skeptics. But it's pretty clear, says Ashley Parker in The New York Times, that the often "inscrutable, overly polished, and occasionally robotic" candidate "is striving mightily to humanize himself just three weeks before the first round of voting begins." How? Here are six ways:

1. Deputizing his family
The humanizing effort began last week with a spate of TV ads emphasizing Mitt the Family Man. And to "show his softer side," says Philip Rucker in The Washington Post, Romney "has been campaigning more frequently with his wife, Ann, and their family." He's had various of his five sons introduce him at events, and is telling more personal anecdotes about his family life. The subtext may be a swipe at thrice-married GOP frontrunner Newt Gingrich, but it's also tactically "good to remind Iowans of how strong he is from a family standpoint," says unaligned Iowa GOP congressman Steve King.

SEE MORE: The radical dangers of Mitt Romney's America

?

2. Sending his wife to talk about his unseen side
Beyond featuring wife Ann in ads, Romney is sending her out to smaller private fundraisers to talk about "the side of Mitt people don't see or don't hear about." In other words, says Jessica Grose in Slate, "she's trying to make Mitt seem less stiff, and more fun." It might work, but if she wants to improve on "her first attempt at Mitt humanization circa 2007," Ann Romney is going to have to be a little more "specific, intimate, and revealing." It's nice that Mitt stood by her through breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, but Ann will have to "up the personal disclosures if she wants to crack that lacquered image that most people have of her husband."

3. Talking about his Mormonism
The Dec. 10 debate marked the first time in four years that Romney brought up being a Mormon, and he's only upped the religion talk since, discussing his stints as a missionary in France and as a stateside counselor to struggling Mormons. In "racing to humanize a distant and sometimes awkward politician...," say Ben Smith and Maggie Haberman in Politico, Team Romney just "smashed personal red lines the candidate spent decades erecting." He's even joking about his religion, claiming that he "encouraged the guys" who created the lewd, satirical Broadway hit The Book of Mormon, "because I thought that'd be really helpful."

SEE MORE: Romney's big weakness: Speaking French?

?

4. Talking (maybe too much) about his hardships
Mitt's Mormon remembrances included new details about his two-year missionary stint that weren't even in his autobiography. Insisting he wasn't "living high on the hog" in France, Romney told a crowd on Sunday that he'd subsisted on $110 a month, in bare-bones apartments often without refrigerators, showers, or even toilets. Instead of toilets, he had "little pads on the ground, OK?" he elaborated. "You know how that works, all right. There was a chain behind you with a bucket ? it was a bucket affair." I get that he's trying to "shed his robotic image,"?says Zeke Miller in Business Insider. But that's "a definitional case of the phrase 'Too Much Information'."

5. Meeting the press more
After facing criticism for avoiding the press, and then blowing an on-air chat with Fox News'?Bret Baier, Romney has dramatically boosted his access to reporters. More is needed, American University political scientist Leonard Steinhorn tells the Boston Herald. "If he wants to humanize himself, he better work as quickly as possible and work as many media outlets as possible," especially Jon Stewart's Daily Show. Romney himself seems cool to the idea, telling the Herald he'd "much rather have a setting that's fun, and give-and-take."

SEE MORE: How Romney could lose to Gingrich... just like Romney's dad lost to Nixon

?

6. Talking about how equally un-human his rivals are
Romney's estimated $200 million in wealth may make him seem removed from everyday Americans, but he "doesn't want to be cast as the only rich person in the race for the Republican presidential nomination," says Brian Montopoli in CBS News. On Wednesday Romney pointed out that Gingrich is also "a wealthy man, a very wealthy man," adding that "if you have a half a million dollar purchase from Tiffany's, you're not a middle class American." Zing! Gingrich is worth at least $6.7 million.

Inquiry: Thousands abused in Catholic institutions

(AP) ? Thousands of children suffered sexual abuse in Dutch Catholic institutions, and church officials failed to adequately address the abuse or help the victims, according to a long-awaited investigation released Friday.

The report by the an independent commission said Catholic officials failed to tackle the widespread abuse "to prevent scandals."

Based on a survey among more than 34,000 people, the commission estimated that one in 10 Dutch children suffered some form of abuse. The number doubled to 20 percent of children who spent some of their youth in a Catholic institution.

The commission said it received some 1,800 complaints of abuse at Catholic schools, seminaries and orphanages and that the institutions suffered from "a failure of oversight."

The commission was set up last year under the leadership of former government minister Wim Deetman to investigate allegations of abuse dating from 1945.

The investigation followed allegations of repeated incidents of abuse at one cloister that quickly spread to claims from Catholic institutions across the country, echoing similar scandals around the world.

The Dutch branch of the Catholic church agreed last month to launch a compensation system that clears the way for victims of abuse by priests and other church workers to receive payments.

The new compensation system has a scale starting at ?5,000 ($6,500) and rising to a maximum of ?100,000 ($130,000) depending on the nature of the abuse.

According to the Dutch Central Bureau for Statistics, 29 percent of the Dutch population of 16 million identified themselves as Catholics in 2008, making it the largest religion in the country.
