SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)? The city of San Francisco is inviting the public to a couple of Summer Olympics viewing parties at Civic Center Plaza next week.

Three Olympians were on hand to help make Tuesday?s announcement from the steps of City Hall. The parties will be held next Tuesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will host Olympic-themed activities like running races, volleyball on the lawn, and a climbing wall.

San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department General Manager Phil Ginsberg was joined by water polo player Sean Nolan, rower Ted Murphy, and pentathlete Marylyn King.

?There will be a big, big screen and up to 10,000 people will be able to watch the Olympic Games [that] will be playing all day long,? said Ginsberg.

KCBS? Anna Duckworth Reports:

San Francisco To Host Olympic Viewing Parties At Civic Center Plaza

The announcement was preceded by an American flag-raising ceremony featuring about 30 elementary school-age campers from the recreation and parks department?s Athletic Camp summer program.

?We intend to do what we do best?celebrate,??former Mayor Willie Brown said as the flag went up and the campers recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brown spoke about San Francisco?s bid in 2002 to host the 2012 Summer Games. The city, through the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee, was a top contender, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

However, the city is proud of the many Olympians with Bay Area ties who are competing in London, Brown said.

The campers then posed for a photo with the athletes, city officials and sponsors of the upcoming Civic Center screenings, and cheered, ?Get out and play!?

King, who competed in 1972 and 1976, asked the 50 or so kids just how many of them know who Michael Phelps is.

?This guy won eight gold medals. He woke up every morning and he thought eight gold medals. What do I need to do today that will get me eight gold medals?? said King with encouragement.

George Broder with the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee said they remain committed to bringing the Olympics to the Bay.

I am once again active... i hope

Well I have been away for quite some time and i am sorry for not announcing that but as my family and i are currently building a house not to mention many other matters which keep me busy i can only say the rp has slipped my mind.

I did not expect to have so many things piled on me at once so i was taken aback by it all.

I will not have the time for too many Rp's so i shall have to make my choices very carefully.

Sorry again for not announcing my departure; i didn't really have the option to do so and by the time i had that option i forgot about it.

Texans WR Johnson hurts groin, leaves practice

HOUSTON (AP) - Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson has left practice with a pulled groin muscle.

Coach Gary Kubiak says Johnson's injury appears minor, but it may still force Johnson to miss "a few" practices.

Johnson missed nine games last season with hamstring injuries and was sidelined from the first organized team activities in the spring after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The five-time Pro Bowl selection started Sunday morning's practice and pulled up during a one-on-one drill.

He watched the rest of the outdoor half of the workout with a towel wrapped around his head, then went to Reliant Stadium when the practice moved indoors.

Wise Kwai's Thai Film Journal: News and Views on Thai Cinema ...

The exhibition of film poster art by Chawana Boonchoo just wrapped up over the weekend at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center, and now there's another gallery of classic movie posters online at Monster Brains.

There are dozens of posters to gander at, all displayed in a very large size.

They are mostly posters for the Thai releases of Hollywood horror and sci-fi films of the 1970s and '80s.

The movies include Jaws, The Evil Dead, Ghoulies, Nightmare on Elm Street, An American Werewolf in London, Terminator and Robocop.

There's even one for the original Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone. However, I can't believe the Thai artist missed an opportunity to paint a three-breasted woman.

There are also a few posters for Thai films, such as the Sompote Sands crocodile creature feature Krai Thong, and even a Hong Kong flick, Sammo Hung's Close Encounters of a Spooky Kind II.

ARPA-E grant helps start Colorado State University natural gas truck project ( Collegian )

By Kyle Grabowski
July 26, 2012 |
SPRINGVILLE, PA - JANUARY 18: A Cabot Oil and...

SPRINGVILLE, PA ? JANUARY 18: A Cabot Oil and Gas natural gas station stands near a hydraulic fracturing site on January 18, 2012 in Springville, Pennsylvania. Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, stimulates gas production by injecting wells with high volumes of chemical-laced water in order to free-up pockets of natural gas below. The process is controversial with critics saying it could poison water supplies, while the natural-gas industry says it?s been used safely for decades. While New York State has yet to decide whether to allow fracking, economically struggling Binghamton has passed a drilling ban which prohibits any exploration or extraction of natural gas in the city for the next two years. The Marcellus Shale Gas Feld extends through parts of New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia and could hold up to 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Most of the struggle to develop alternative energy vehicles is a ?chicken and egg? problem between vehicles and infrastructure. If scientists don?t develop the infrastructure, there?s no point in having vehicles. But if the vehicles don?t exist, why build the infrastructure?

CSU associate professor Thomas Bradley and former CSU assistant professor Christopher Hagen, now an assistant professor at Oregon State University Cascades Campus, are hoping to solve both problems by building a truck that runs on the natural gas from someone?s home.

?To refill a natural gas vehicle like the Transfort buses you need compressed natural gas from a dedicated natural gas station. This is really inconvenient ? there aren?t any public ones in Fort Collins,? Bradley said. ?Our idea is to put the compressor in the car so that you can fill it up from your home or office.?

In order to make this happen, the pair applied for and received a $700,000 grant from the US Department of Energy as part of the Advanced Research Projects Agency?Energy (ARPA-E) Methane Opportunities for Vehicular Energy (MOVE) project. The ARPA-E grant will be the sole funding source for the project.

The Department of Energy was unable to comment because contract negotiations have yet to be finalized, according to an email from Public Affairs Support Contractor Andrew Gumbiner.

From here, Bradley and Hagen have divided the work between their two campuses. Bradley and CSU will handle the software and modeling aspects, while Hagen will deal primarily with building test cells and hardware at OSU-Cascades.

?We?re able to do a lot of our work virtually sharing concepts,? Hagen said. ?It makes the separation easier to manage.?

Currently Hagan has two senior students working with him and Bradley has enlisted a CSU grad student, but Bradley expects the team to grow to as many as 10 CSU students when the project gets into full swing in the fall.

?This is really hard to do. We could go out and hire experts, engineers with 50 years of experience, but it?s all tied in with the education mission of CSU,? Bradley said. ?It takes hard work, creativity and a spark that, sometimes, these kids really provide.?

And if the students continue to stay involved with the project, they could have the opportunity to be a part of a startup company, according to Hagan.

Right now the project is scheduled to last for 18 months with the final goal of creating one truck that can compress the natural gas from a home or office and use it for fuel.

From both sides, the most challenging part is having to rebuild the engine.

?Over time the internal combustion engine has become really sophisticated,? Hagen said. ?We have to crack into it and do a lot of re-engineering.?

?Corporations like Chrysler and GM have teams of hundreds of engineers and take years to make these changes,? Bradley said. ?We?re trying to do it in a year and a half.?

But the end result makes it all worth it.

?This is one of the top priorities of our country right now. It can help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It burns cleaner,? Bradley said. ?What everybody?s striving for is a more sustainable future.?

What You Probably Have Not Ever Being Taught Regarding Parenting

If you are a parent, no doubt it has run through your mind that the way that you do your parenting has a lot to do with how you were raised. Your experiences with your parents, good or bad, will influence your decisions with your own kids in the future. If you want to learn how to be a great parent, usually you have to learn from the mistakes that you experienced, and not repeat them with your own kids. Parents, and soon-to-be parents, should learn the skills as quickly as possible. But learning begins at home for all kids, and you have a terrific opportunity to teach your children positive life skills they can pass along to their own kids one day.

People should get their act together before they ever have children, because arguing around them is a bad idea. This is a very unwise thing to do, for a variety of reasons. Children can sense when there are problems, and too often they will assume that they are the cause, and that is not a good thing. Whenever the parents are having problems with each other, the tension is felt by the children. Raising children is about learning and teaching how to cope in all kinds of situations, so resolving a conflict is a great teaching tool. There is so much teaching on conflict resolution, that it would be nice to see families putting it into practice for the good of the children. I can tell you from personal experience that I quit sports during tryouts because I felt like I was not good enough. It?s hard to forget such a painful memory like that. As a parent, you need to be constantly aware of how your child is feeling. First, determine if the child really wants to participate. Be encouraging and let them decide how they feel about participating. Then, you can take your cues from what is said and offer your wisdom and support. It is easy to get bogged down only looking at one situation, but by looking at how it might be a blessing in disguise will help your child see there might be something different for them in their future.

Did your parents, or one of them, ever force you to do something as a child that you absolutely could not stand doing? Most children have to do regular chores, like taking out the garbage, or making the bed, but something more is what this is about. Quite often a parent demands the child to play a sport which he or she has no desire to play, and this normally causes problems.

Good intentions of parents are not a good enough reason to force their children to play music or a sport that they don?t want to play. Nothing is more frustrating than watching a child try to live up to a parents expectation when there is no desire. What determines how good a parent is at parenting, is seen by how well the children develop in their own area of ability and desire. It seems that a good chunk of parenting is just being able to watch your child and be willing to have an open line of communication. Often times parents do too much talking, so give your children a chance to be a part of the conversation.

Young Stranger: 750

Seven hundred fifty is the number, in a new survey of individuals identifying as both LGBT/SSA and Mormon, who reported having spiritual experiences in which they were reassured by their Heavenly Father that their gayness was a good and intrinsic part of who they are.? This was 47% of a sample of 1600 respondents to an in-depth survey that covered information about early perceptions of sexual difference, sexual identity formation, efforts to cope with sexual orientation, and the role of faith in all of this.? Preliminary findings from the survey were presented by John Dehlin and Bill Bradshaw at this year's Sunstone Symposium.

That number made me feel much less alone.? I had a very powerful (and unexpected) experience of this nature in 1986 (as I've described in my spiritual autobiography).? For many years, I was the only person I knew who had had such an experience.? Gradually, over the years, I read of or encountered others who shared experiences of a similar nature.? I've encountered these types of stories often enough to realize that they are not uncommon.? Still, 47% out of a group of 1600 gay men and lesbians seemed like an astonishing number to me.

Any reckoning of the ultimate significance of this number, however, will need to account for the fact that 16% of survey respondents reported receiving spiritual confirmation that God rejected their homosexuality.? The apparent conflict highlights the challenges of validating spiritual experiences and evaluating them in a broad context.

The other presented data I found interesting had to do with respondents' reported levels of happiness and quality of life.? This is the first time I've seen the different relationship configurations of gay men and lesbians evaluated in this way.? Single or celibate gay men and lesbians reported the least happiness.? Gay men and lesbians in mixed orientation marriages reported the next lowest levels of happiness.? Gay men and lesbians in some sort of committed relationship reported quality of life slightly less than healthy heterosexual married individuals.? Gay men and lesbians who were legally married reported levels of happiness comparable to or even slightly higher than healthy, married heterosexuals.

What I thought noteworthy about this is the fact that while, on average, gay or lesbian individuals in mixed orientation marriages reported lower quality of life than gay or lesbian individuals in committed same-sex relationships or in same-sex marriages (or, for that matter, married heterosexual individuals), they were still happier than single/celibate gays and lesbians.? This is logical, when one considers the fact that needs for human touch and companionship will be fulfilled even in a less than ideal marital relationship.

This data confirms the observation that the Church's recent emphasis on celibacy as the only acceptable option for gay and lesbian individuals is unlikely to deter individuals from entering into mixed orientation marriages.? Since the Church's emphasis on singleness/celibacy for gays and lesbians effectively consigns them to the most stressful and unhappy life status, no one should wonder why, if gay individuals don't opt for a mixed orientation marriage, the vast majority eventually end up leaving the Church if a same-sex relationship is an option.

I think these data also beg the question: If singles (gay and straight) are the most unhappy of these demographic groups, how have we as a Church/society failed singles?? These are the individuals that demand our most serious and immediate attention.? What can we do to address this problem?? Are our families, Churches and social groups configured in such a way as to create or exacerbate the unhappiness measured in this survey?? And if so, what do we need to do to change that?

Finally, these data speak to the question of why legal relationship recognition in the form of full marriage equality matters.? Based on the data that was presented, it's impossible to know conclusively why legally married same-sex couples reported higher levels of happiness than same-sex couples who were only in extra-legal committed relationships.? Is it because commitment in the form of marriage offered a greater sense of security and stability in the relationship?? Is it because gay couples who are legally married are more likely to live in states where society treats them as equals?? Whatever the case, it seems to me that any commonwealth that claims to be concerned about the well being of all its citizens, needs to consider the impact that denying marriage rights will have on the health and well being of its gay citizens.

Parenthetically, it's worth considering the implications of this data about quality of life and happiness for religious beliefs about homosexuality.? Religious opponents of same-sex relationships have always argued that a lifetime of diminished happiness is a small price to pay for exaltation in eternity.? Regardless of what the data say, in other words, we still have to wrestle with larger questions about the meaning of suffering, and the relationship between holiness and happiness.

I think it's worth noting that I did experience an increase in personal happiness after I found and made a commitment to my life partner, G?ran.? However, I feel like my level of happiness in life increased even more dramatically after I opened myself up to wrestling with what my testimony of the Gospel and of the LDS Church meant to me as a gay man, and after I started attending Church and applying Gospel principles to my life.? Our decision to get legally married and the personal satisfaction I've derived from getting married are connected to my faith.? In other words, I am happy to the extent I am able to live a life of integrity and wholeness -- in my relationship with my husband, as well as in my relationship with God and with my community of faith.

None of the data presented by Bro. Dehlin and Bro. Bradshaw free us of the responsibility of wrestling with difficult questions.? Data never just speak for themselves.? All the same, it is helpful to have data.? With or without the data, we still have to wrestle with the questions of meaning.? But it is better to wrestle with these questions in the presence of good data, than with no data or bad data.? I've personally wrestled with a lot of these questions, and I've for the most part found resolutions to the most troubling questions, and Bro. Dehlin's and Bro. Bradshaw's data offered me some helpful perspectives on my own experience.

How summer thunderstorms could be punching new holes in the ozone layer

A study looking at conditions in the lower stratosphere, where the ozone layer resides, suggests a link between climate change and the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth's surface.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / July 26, 2012

This NOAA satellite image shows clouds cover the Northern and Eastern U.S. There have been reports of severe thunderstorm development across the Northeast. A recent study has tied summer thunderstorms to climate change.

AP PHOTO/WEATHER UNDERGROUND

Global warming could open new holes in Earth's ozone layer at latitudes that until now have seemed immune to the ozone destruction that recurs over Antarctica and the Arctic, a new study warns.

The underappreciated keys to this conundrum: water vapor and temperatures in the lower stratosphere, where the ozone layer appears. Both, the researchers say, reach summertime values over the continental US known to encourage ozone-destroying chemicals that are already aloft to attack ozone.

The team makes no attempt to project when significant erosion might be expected to occur. And researchers have yet to make the measurements that would confirm that the reactions the study describes are occurring. Rather, it points to conditions that are appearing and are known to stimulate stratospheric ozone destruction.

The results suggest a clear link between climate change and the amount of harmful ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth's surface, says James Anderson, a Harvard atmospheric scientist and the lead author of the study, which appears in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

When people talk about global warming, "most people would have their backyard warmer than it is now," he says. But global warming "is not about that," he adds. "It's about these feedbacks that couple the system into irreversible paths forward. That's the primary concern."

At ground level, ozone is a pollutant ? a key element of smog. In the stratosphere, however, it shields organisms on Earth from destructively excessive levels of ultraviolet light from the sun.

The study by Dr. Anderson's team is based on well-established atmospheric chemistry and observations over the continental United States of an underappreciated character in the ozone story: summer thunderstorms.

In essence, the team found that thunderstorms and their powerful, convective updrafts drive unexpectedly large concentrations of water vapor high into the stratosphere. The high concentrations of water vapor alter conditions in ways that encourage ozone destruction when the man-made chemicals associated with ozone depletion are present.

If the frequency and intensity of mid-latitude storms increase with time, as some global-warming models suggest, Anderson and his colleagues say they are concerned that ozone destruction at mid-latitudes could become one of those irreversible feedbacks.

"This is a really important find to nail down," says Mary Barth, an atmospheric scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., noting that it begs for field measurements to see how valid the warning is and how widely any effect might reach.

Dr. Barth, who was not part of Anderson's team, and colleagues have just completed a field project gathering data on thunderstorms and their impact on atmospheric chemistry, including ozone reactions.

In fact, Anderson's team initially was working on another climate problem: the formation of cirrus clouds and their effect on climate. Clouds represent one of the big areas of uncertainty in climate models. And cirrus clouds can have a warming effect on climate by allowing sunlight through but trapping heat rising up from underneath. The tops of thunderheads are one source of cirrus clouds, which assume their feather-like appearance as high-altitude winds blow across the tops of the thunderheads, giving them their anvil shape.

Researchers have known that the most powerful thunderstorms, whose strong updrafts can punch through the boundary between the troposphere (where weather happens) and the stratosphere, can deposit large amounts of water vapor in the stratosphere. But Anderson's team was using high-altitude aircraft to measure water vapor rising the tops of a broader range of thunderstorms.

"We weren't hunting for big game here," he says. The aircraft were taking measurements from garden-variety summer thunderstorms over the Midwest and along the East Coast.

"To our huge surprise, we discovered that those convective storms were not simply distributing water in the upper troposphere," he says. Rather, they were lofting water vapor three to four miles into the stratosphere. Plumes often reached altitudes exceeding 60,000 feet.

Anderson had been deeply involved in studies of ozone depletion over Antarctica and the Arctic. What researchers learned about Arctic ozone depletion in particular triggered alarm bells. There, ozone depletion was all about the interplay between water vapor, temperature, the ozone-destroying compounds, and tiny particles known as sulfate aerosols ? which act as tiny platforms on which chemical reactions can occur.

As water-vapor concentrations rose, so did the temperature at which the ozone-eating reactions could begin to take place, suggesting that the temperatures and water vapor were the key controls.

Under commonly observed conditions of water vapor and aerosol concentrations, the temperature at which ozone-depleting reactions would take place is about minus 119 degrees F., the researchers explain. Double the amount of water vapor, and the temperature at which reactions start rises by about 10 degrees F., bringing it within the range of temperatures commonly found in the stratosphere during mid-latitude summers.

Anderson's team studied data from the continental US, but it notes that similar conditions may appear over other parts of the globe.

The study points to "the potential for a pretty significant effect on stratospheric ozone at latitudes where we normally wouldn't think that would happen," said Mario Molina, an atmospheric scientist at the University of California at San Diego who shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 with the late Frank Rowland. The two worked out the chemistry behind stratospheric ozone depletion and chlorofluorocarbons, once widely used as refrigerants and aerosol-spray propellants.

"Many ecological systems are quite sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, and they have not evolved the repair mechanisms for more severe ozone depletion," Dr. Molina said in a prepared statement.

The 1987 Montreal Protocol and subsequent agreements have played important roles in halting production of key ozone-depleting chemicals, Anderson notes. But these compounds remain in the stratosphere for decades. Moreover, the sulfate aerosols there occur naturally: They are not affected by controls on sulfur emissions at ground level.

Without reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions ? especially carbon dioxide, which itself remains in the atmosphere for centuries ? ozone holes once limited to the poles could become regular summertime features over some of the most populated places on the planet, the team suggests.

With the Montreal Protocol, many people said in effect, problem solved ? let's move on, Anderson says, acknowledging that even he had dealt with ozone destruction and global warming as separate issues.

People "completely forgot about the remarkable dependence of the destruction of ozone on water and temperature," he says.

The Negotiating Manager | ReadyToManage

The Negotiating Manager

Managers engage in negotiating many times every day. Sometimes this will be on significant issues and in a formal way but more generally will be to solve minor challenges such as obtaining or assembling needed resources. Negotiation as an activity is a special kind of communication because it uses a number of tactics and methods for communicating which are not usually part of normal everyday conversation or discussion. In order to be successful in our negotiations, some prior clarity about what we really want is always a good idea, especially if the outcome matters to us enough. Hence, in an important negotiation, we should give ourselves the time to reflect and ideally write down the outcomes or goals that we are realistically seeking. These written aspirations will usually list what must be achieved, what should be achieved and what would be nice to achieve in the negotiation. By doing this kind of preparation, we significantly increase our chances of negotiating success.

Ingredients:Readiness Recipes

  • Business mindedness
  • Capacity to cooperate and collaborate
  • Conflict management ability
  • Influencing skills
  • Listening skills
  • Problem-solving ability

Ingredients should be added, blended well and left to mature over time:

  • Business mindedness:?This refers to a manager?s ability to assess the business or commercial impact of issues or challenges that might arise and react in an appropriate way.
  • Capacity to cooperate and collaborate: This refers to a manager?s capacity to work positively and flexibly in group situations, maintaining an open and helpful attitude.
  • Conflict management ability: This refers to a manager?s capacity to manage any conflict encountered (within him or herself or generated by others).
  • Influencing skills: This refers to a manager?s capacity to bring others to a particular way of thinking in a persuasive but non-threatening way and without any force or coercion.
  • Listening skills: This refers to a manager?s capacity to both hear and understand other people, and to quickly discern the full communication or message, both verbal and non-verbal.
  • Problem-solving ability: This refers to a manager?s ability to find appropriate methods and means to analyze others? concerns or situations and to suggest potential avenues to explore that may provide a solution.

The Negotiating?Manager?has all of these ingredients; no substitutions or omissions can be made to the recipe.

?Readiness Recipes??is a new article series exploring 26 different kinds of managers A-Z and the key ingredients that each needs for success. ?Stay tuned for more recipes and thanks for reading!

Zab Judah | 400 Liberty Avenue | Brooklyn Rental ... - The Real Deal

Zab Judah

An East New York boxing club run by the father of a former world champion is facing eviction after falling prey to a real estate scam, the New York Daily News reported. Judah Brothers Boxing Club, run by the father of former welterweight world champion Zab Judah, opened last summer at 400 Liberty Avenue after Yoel Judah agreed to a rent deal with someone claiming to be an associate of the building?s landlord, Chester Meisels.

Judah repeatedly asked to sign a lease, but the man did not produce paperwork. The boxing trainer finally became suspicious after paying several months of rent without a formal lease. Now, Meisels has emerged and said he is owed $360,000 in back rent. He also wants to make sure that Judah has a viable business plan with financial backing for a club that trains impoverished children, some of whom attend for free because they can?t afford membership fees.

?I don?t want to evict them. I pity the kids,? Meisels told the News. ?I believe it does a great value for the neighborhood. But on the other hand I cannot house a tenant that cannot pay their dues.? [NYDN]

Car Rental Companies: Is Cheaper Always ... - Travel and Leisure

The top car rental companies usually have the same rates for their car rental services. However, there are also a number of car rental companies that offer cheaper rates making them quite popular among customers who think costs of such a service is the no. 1 factor that affects their decision making. Although cheaper rates are definitely the logical way to go, is cheaper always better? There is no clear cut answer because this depends on how many passengers you will have, where you are going, and how much your budget is for gas.

There is a way to get cheaper rates at reputable companies known for their great customer service and this means one has to reserve the smallest vehicle that the rental company has. Cheaper is always better when saving money but there are things to consider. This includes the insurance and liability, additional charges for things like being late for pick-up, or exorbitant charges for drop-offs. More often than not, a cheap car rental rate does not include other charges which makes it imperative for the customer to do some research and asking a representative of that particular company about other details.

Those who rent cars usually do not give much attention to car rental companies and their rates which leads them to just go to one that offers the cheapest rental prices. Rates do vary though based on the destination, the company and the make and model of the car one chooses as well as the insurance that is included or not included.

Whatever the rates are however, one should keep in mind that a good car rental services has great reviews in terms of promptness of service, rate quote honored, value, vehicle satisfaction and availability, and their staff?s knowledge and courteousness.

Sometimes, cheap car rentals are a great choice though especially if you are travelling to areas where there are a number of local car rental places. Compared to the bigwigs in the business, these companies usually offer very low rates to their customers and often, they also have the types of vehicles needed or work best in such an area or terrain.

Car rental companies are very competitive though that is why customers have to do some shopping first before choosing which one to go to. Booking with reputable, local car rental companies is a bright idea though if you want to save a few bucks.

IBM Connect Day 2012: Meet the experts | Thoughts on Cloud Blog

July is known for the well-established annual?IBM Connect Day 2012 in D?sseldorf, Germany.? The agenda was promising and I easily decided to join.

IBM invited people to share in the latest news about the IBM SmartCloud initiative. With more than 120 attendees, from managers to developers, strategic consultants and IBM Business Partners, the sessions have been watched from various perspectives.

This year?s motto, IBM Connect Day, was selected based on the full capability of mobile solutions into the cloud.

More than 20 breakout sessions, held by IBM and IBM Business Partners, IBM Connect Day showed the latest software releases and features.

Maria Gomez, Director of IBM Social Business and Collaboration Solutions for IBM Deutschland, gave an exciting keynote to introduce her view of how to drive social media in the cloud. Her three key messages were:

  • Prepare your environment for the next level.
  • Start small but be sure about the target.
  • Introduce the features available on the market already.

Knowing that my clients are not ready yet and that I have to drive their change, I picked a couple of sessions to prepare myself, concerning the following subjects:

  • Overall understanding of how to manage and introduce my applications to mobile devices
  • How to build a social portal accessible by every device
  • How to manage my device
  • How to move my Lotus Notes applications to mobile devices

From the variety of sessions (over 20), I picked the following:

IBM Lotus Mobile Strategy for Social Business presentation

The session was held by ?Mobile Mike? (Michael Hoffmann, IBM) and was all about Mobile First!.

The strategy is to develop new features for mobile devices with higher priority than for desktop or web-based applications. For most customers, the enormous diversity of requirements for mobile devices seems to be the biggest challenge. The answer was given in the session:

  • IBM Lotus traveler combines the out of the box IBM Lotus Domino capabilities for mobile devices.
  • The integration into IBM Sametime and IBM Connections will bring newly designed applications for mobile device. With 44 updates over the last year and 21 available apps, the focus is clear. Because the update lifecycle is independent from the major product release cycle, the attention on mobile apps is much faster.
  • Because buy your own devices (BYOD) is a natural driver, IBM strategy is to cover all mobile platforms to keep track of the variety of Android or iOS versions.

So what is new in the products?

  • This week, the announcement came for the IBM Traveler.? It is now able to use IBM Domino cluster service features, which will provide the full horizontal cluster capabilities as known from IBM Lotus Domino. On top of that, ?the Traveler for tablet Android devices has been launched.
  • IBM Sametime is providing an application for mobile devices. Chat, awareness, and telephony has been implemented. What is missing is the VOIP call feature, but this has already been announced for the next release. Call routing and one-number service are used to reduce call costs and bring more flexibility to improve communication. IBM Sametime meeting, launched from Apple iPad, Blackberry, or Android, connects employees to their home base at any time.
  • Working with IBM Connections mobile offers the possibility to use web browser apps, Connections 3.x mobile apps, and enterprise social collaboration in a single place. The drop box way of using files offline is the latest feature to also cover secured file transfer to mobile devices.

A lot of new features, yes, but how do I manage my devices from an enterprise and security perspective?

The challenge is still how to manage features and easy access versus managed security. The answers from IBM are:

  • Tivoli Endpoint Manager to take care of, for example, patching, anti-virus, or device wiping. The IBM Endpoint Manager has been extended to have a single product with a single console to manage desktops and also mobile devices. Security compliance and automated control are now available.
  • IBM Worklight brings a development suite so you can manage applications from a central management console.

A bit more on how IBM Worklight?should work

When it comes to application development, IBM presented two major directions that drive the market:

  • Native mobile applications
  • Runs in a browser

The strategy is to combine a hybrid solution to stay flexible to answer day-by-day challenges. The forecast is that at least 80 percent of development will cover both components. HTML5, native container, and Javascript are the enablers. XPages platform with mobile-specific controls is the answer to transfer native IBM Lotus Domino applications to mobile devices. For more extended development, the IBM Worklight client can transform the application into an easy-to-use mobile app. This is the way to use a kind of translation to fit to all tablets or smaller devices. To reach the devices, the IBM Worklight Server is taking care of updates, authentication, or other requirements to manage the newly created applications. The intention is to make the product available for Websphere Portal and Domino to cover both IBM products. In summary, after 45 Minutes, two new products were introduced that exactly fit to fill the gap on ?how to develop and secure mobile apps.?

The next session on my pick-list was about social portal to integrate social networks in business applications. Katrin Stein, IBM gave some inside information about the key drivers for a social portal.

The main topic was about how to attract visitors to stay in the portal.

Being trustworthy, secured, and available are the keys to keeping visitors on the page.? The social portal is the answer to combining business content like SAP with social information such as?email addresses, blogs, or wikis.

As a nice example, ?myportal.robinson.de? was presented. Robinson Club is a worldwide known brand and part of the TUI AG in my home town of Hannover, Germany. Their need to create a portal is based on needing much of their to be provided in a very short time frame. The vacation time is short, there is a high fluctuation in staff, a lot of onboarding for new colleagues, a lot of content to search, worldwide availability, and absolute independence of the device used to access.

The key requirements are:
  • Modern intranet with a lot of dynamic content
  • Clear role and security model
  • Self-registration, less administrative effort
  • Easy to search
  • One portal for all

?

The solution to cover the requirements:
  • My home: with email, travel expenses, phone list, events, who is who
  • My apps: public and company specific apps
  • My communities: ?blogs, wikis, profiles
  • My chat: chat feature to connect to all colleagues
  • My search: search feature, bulletin board, favorites, translator

Check out the portal to see how the demo fits to reality:

http://myportal.robinson.de

In summary, the portal idea is not new, but the combination with social media seems to be the enabler for success.

It was time for me to see how my clients can make use of what I learned. Basically most of the applications are developed already and the challenge is to get them onto the devices. The first question to answer: How do we control and support the devices without running into a support nightmare?

The session I picked next was held by a Business Partner, Midpoints.de. Detlev Poettgen is already known to lead the mobile discussions of how to implement mobile devices in large environments. This chapter?is definitely a high level feedback from the session. As always Detlev was able to bring in so many details in a short time that for most of the audience, this was more than they have been able to work out in their own projects so far.

Three topics to summarize the session to rollout mobile devices are:

  • Platform considerations: Define the scope, replace old solutions, add additional solutions. The key is to focus on the target of what to reach ? should it be only email or other apps also?
  • Choose the target: How is the target for the device, BYOD, clear strategy on company and privately owned device. Pick the right number of devices to support.
  • What is needed: Device policy, configuration policy, device enrollment, clarity on duties and maintenance, monitoring and managing of devices, crystal clear communication about roles and responsibilities.

At the end of the session, we got a quick demo of the Midpoint iOS profiler, a mobile device management solution to manage my mobile device. It was impressive to see how easy rolling out and updating applications can be. The whole infrastructure is based on IBM SmartCloud solution powered by IBM Domino. I?ll definitely look into the details to check out the features in more depth.

Summary

The time was flying and in summary I have seen excellent sessions about:

  • IBM strategy of cloud implementation
  • Cloud device management
  • Cloud application development
  • Cloud application deployment

With the package given, I?ll approach my CIO to see where we are. How about your clients? Where are they today?

For those of you interested, I?ll share the link to the presentation material as soon as possible. The next event is already announced for September in Stuttgart.

Article Marketing Secrets For A Successful Campaign ? Yapperz ...

More and more businesses are relying on Internet traffic to get new customers. In order to have that help, you need to be marketing online in productive fashion. The following article marketing tips will provide you with the knowledge you need to be able to successfully use this type of marketing. futuristic marketing video

A lot of websites will pay you a commission based on the number of times your article is viewed. Article writing can actually be very profitable. You may be surprised how much you earn from your articles.

The best way to go about writing content is to use your natural way of speaking. Work with language that is most familiar to you; if you find yourself trying to use words that you are not knowledgeable about, you may have difficulty coming across as authoritative. This is because your readers will realize this isn't really your voice that is writing the article, which will cause them to shy away from reading your article.

Articles should be no more or less than 400 to 600 words. Having articles that are the right length will keep your readers interested. The average person is likely to become bored, and skip through long drawn-out articles. Keep your articles clear and concise.

By creating a blog about your business, you will have a forum to demonstrate your industry leadership. Let your personality shine through on your blog by posting thoughtful, humorous articles that show your readers a softer side of you. Writing articles about the latest advancements in your business field is a great way to show your readers that you are well-informed and up-to-date.

You can engage a reader effectively by telling a joke in the article's first few lines. However the trick to the marketing strategy is telling the right kind of joke, as not all jokes work when read. Figuring out the most appropriate jokes, will help with the articles success.

Use anchor text in phrases that are hyperlinked so that you can better promote your articles. Gain a strong online presence by back-linking at least two different websites via your blog.

When writing articles, start them with strong openers that stop the reader in their tracks. A good opener will draw people in to what you are offering. Your closing statements are equally as important as your opening ones. The readers need to be interested in your content so that they can increase your profits by purchasing your goods.

Use the guidance contained in this piece and start boosting the online profile of your business by becoming a skilled article marketer. You might just find that article marketing is a great inexpensive tool which will provide you with the results you're looking for.

Week 94 | Third Wave GmbH

Strategy consultants need strategy consulting, too

During my two-month internship at Third Wave ? between semesters as a graduate student in the MBA in Design Strategy program at California College of the Arts ? I ?decorated? the office in Post-it notes, prepared preliminary research and workshop materials for a client?s business model project, and got to flex the kind of consulting muscles that I had set out to exercise this summer.

The outsider inside

Acting as an embedded consultant, so to speak, I took on a project to help Third Wave plan for its own future, including assessing the business model (based on the Business Model Generation approach), clarifying communication materials, diagramming the processes, etc. I carefully reviewed existing web and blog content, surveyed the competitive landscape, and conducted individual interviews with Third Wave?s team members.

As an ?outsider? I was able to recognize needs and strengths, and as an ?insider? I was able to understand the company?s culture and aspirations. It was a unique position that afforded me unique perspective.

Professional paradox

You may be wondering: Why would a strategy consulting firm have a need for strategic consulting itself?

Ironically, the work one is most adept at in service to others can also be the most difficult to implement internally. For example, in my experience as a copywriter, it has always felt quite natural to write on behalf of companies, products and other people. But writing my own bio?! Oh, boy?

Similarly, while Third Wave has been hard at work building the business by producing innovative strategies for clients for close to two years now, the company?s own strategic planning has remained on the sidelines. It is not uncommon to put off taking the time to apply your own skills to your own needs. This speaks to the value that a consultant can bring: focus and commitment throughout a process.

Beauty and the Beast

As I prepare to depart from Berlin, I?m mulling over the role and benefits of strategic consulting work. On my mind is how, ideally, a strategy project sheds light on issues and ideas that, once written down, seem obvious. Yet up until pen hits paper (er, finger hits keyboard), the insights have a habit of dancing around elusively.

Transforming complexity into simplicity: this is the beauty and beast of strategy work. To help a company look into the future, sometimes all it takes is a pair of fresh eyes.

I hope my contributions will be as illuminating to Third Wave as the experience was for me. I?m looking forward to seeing how the company evolves.

China's economy to rebound in second half: IMF

China's economy will rebound in the second half of 2012 to achieve annual growth of eight percent as government policies to spur growth take effect, the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday.

"Growth is expected to bottom out in the second quarter, and then accelerate in the second half of the year," the IMF said in an annual report on China's economy, predicting China's economy would expand by 8.5 percent in 2013.

The Fund noted that Chinese authorities, whose views are included in the report, said they had been pursuing policies to achieve a more sustainable pace of economic growth.

"This managed slowdown, however, has run into stronger-than-anticipated headwinds from the worsening of the euro area crisis," the IMF said.

"Measures to support growth are now being given more prominence and the authorities are confident that growth will be at least 7.5 percent this year."

China's slowing economy has prompted authorities to slash interest rates and loosen requirements for the amount of reserves banks must maintain as ways to spur lending and boost activity.

Growth in the world's second-largest economy slowed to a more than three-year low of 7.6 percent in the second quarter, marking the sixth straight three-month period in which it had weakened.

The Washington-based IMF said the projection, reached in consultation with Chinese authorities, was based on the premise that China maintains policies aimed at such a result.

It cited the ongoing eurozone sovereign debt crisis as the biggest external risk facing China's economy.

"The authorities were concerned about the external outlook, especially the risk of a worsening of the euro area crisis and the lack, so far, of a sufficiently strong policy response within Europe," the IMF said.

Chinese leaders have repeatedly expressed concern over the weakening economy and vowed to take further measures.

Premier Wen Jiabao has called stabilising growth the government's top priority.

The Difference between Mesothelioma and Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease that can increase your risk for lung cancer. Mesothelioma is a cancer. Both mesothelioma and asbestosis are brought about by asbestos exposure, but their effects on your health, happiness, and mortality will be drastically different.

Asbestosis

Asbestosis occurs when inhaled asbestos fibers scar the internal lining of your lungs. Once scarred, your lungs cannot recover, resulting in chest pain and tightness, shortness of breath, and chronic coughing. As a chronic disease, there is no cure for asbestosis. However, with treatment, it is possible to lead a more comfortable life.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that arises from the covering of the organs. With asbestos inhalation, mesothelioma in the lungs is most common. However, mesothelioma from asbestos exposure can also occur in the heart and chest.

Mesothelioma may be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, but the survival rate for a stage II diagnosis and beyond is very small. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, Washington D.C. lawyer Matthew Kiely can help you determine if you are entitled to seek compensation for your medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

If you have been diagnosed with either asbestosis or mesothelioma, please contact the Law Offices of Matthew E. Kiely, LLC to schedule a free initial consultation today. Attorney Kiely represents people in Maryland, Washington D.C., and throughout the United States.
