Knifeman's threat outside Caia Park sports centre

A KNIFE-wielding man threatened police with a kitchen knife near a Wrexham sports centre.

William Peter Roberts, 51, was holding aloft a kitchen knife and shouting at passers-by, including parents with small children, on the playing field opposite Queensway sports centre in Caia Park, Wrexham Magistrates Court heard.

Roberts, of Montgomery Road, Wrexham, pleaded guilty to causing fear of violence with threatening and abusive behaviour and to possessing a knife blade in a public place.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, said police officers found Roberts at the playing field at about 9pm on June 29.

He was holding the knife with both arms raised and shouting and swearing.
When the officers approached he said: ?Come near me and I?ll do you,? pointing the knife at them.

Mr Espie said there were a lot of people present, including young children.

Roberts was described as waving the knife and pointing it at them, to the shock of onlookers, he said.

He was shouting loudly, but officers were unable to understand what he was saying due to his drunken state.

An inspector tried to talk to him and eventually he put the knife on the ground and was arrested.

Humphrey Hills, defending, said Roberts had suffered three bereavements recently. He lost his mother and brother in 2009 and his girlfriend in 2010.

?He has been living with the trauma of those losses and not been able to come to terms with them,? he said.

?The trauma has been exacerbated by alcohol use and vice versa.?

He said Roberts had a serious alcohol problem and on the day had come home after going out drinking in a ?distraught state?.

District Judge Andrew Shaw sent the case to be sentenced at Mold Crown Court on August 16.
